For my #Phonar project I am going to be looking into my family albums but mainly my granddads and the time he spent in the Portuguese Colonial war. I have been doing some basic research on the war as I didn’t have that much knowledge of it and wanted to get some background information for my project.
A brief background to the war…
In the 1500s, Portugal colonized the present-day west African country of Guinea-Bissau, and the two southern African countries of Angola and Mozambique. Then in the 20th century Portugal was under international pressure to release these three colonies but Portugal’s dictator Antonio Salazar refused to do this. There were a lot of independence movements that began to happen and this is how the colonial war of the 1960’s and 70’s happened. There were tens of thousands killed in this decade because of it.
Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau all gained independence in 1975. There were civil wars that took millions of lives in the decades after independence as these countries were all undeveloped. More than a million refugees from these countries emigrated to Portugal after independence and strained the Portuguese economy.
Many Portuguese came over to the UK in the 1960s and 1970s during the rule of Portuguese dictator Salazer. As prior to membership of the European Union in 1986 Portugal was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe. There was pressure to look for work abroad. As well as wanting work many young men also emigrated to avoid military service. Many Portuguese people originated from their former overseas territories in Africa.
