RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL

YOU’RE NAME

Melissa Santos

TITLE OF RESEARCH PROJECT

How are celebrities constructed as role models through their media representation

MODE OF PRESENTATION SELECTED

DVD Presentation

DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT TO BE INVESTIGATED

I will be investigating how celebrities have become to be a constructed role models and if and how this has changed progressively by the years. Looking into celebrities as commodities, social and cultural influences how they become role models to certain generations progressively.  What is the purpose of their image at each stage of their career? I will be looking into what actually makes a celebrity a role model or idol to a certain generation and through what kind of representations they portray of themselves. For example through use of promotion shoots, advertising, product endorsements, music, etc.

As an example we see young girls who have grown up watching Hannah Montana on TV and have had her as her role model throughout her time working for Disney but as Miley has grown up her fan base has probably changed because of the way she has been portrayed through her mediated image and her new manager.  We have seen this before with stars such as Britney Spears and Madonna and their fan base also change as they have got older and appealing to a completely different generation through the way they decide to ‘market’ and represent themselves to their new targeted audience.  How have they constructed themselves for constant change through use of their public media representation?

KEY IDEADS

  • What is representation
  • Marketing; magazine covers, adverts, endorsement etc.
  • Stages in a celebrities life (child stars developing into adults stars)
  • Society change – how this affect celebrities, trends etc.
  • Appearance

 SOURCES TO BE UTILISED

For my project I will be using the following materials to support my work:

  • First hand research (I hope to ask different generation what they see in specific celebrities to be a role model and if this has changed whilst growing up. Possibly conduct a survey?)
  • Interview materials
  • Newspaper reports
  • TV programmes
  • YouTube videos
  • Books

METHODS TO BE USED IN ACQUISITION OF SOURCES

I will be hoping to look through online sources about celebrities and their way of how they become idols through the power of the media. Looking into how they portray their image to the public, through their style, language, endorsements, shoots, magazine covers etc. As well as using online sources I am hoping to read into the actual meaning of representation of people and the representation of celebrities as a whole. (Stuart Hall’s – Representation).

I will be going to the library to read into books mainly or online reading as well as looking for material mentioned above online or as artefacts.

METHODS/FORMS OF INTERPRETATION/ANALYSIS TO BE USED WITH THE INFORMATION AND SOURCES

I will be organising all my research into groups most likely by celebrity as I will be looking into a few specific celebrities and how they have become to be a constructed role models and if and how this has changed progressively by the years suited to their targeted audiences.

  1. Maybe another example would be the popularity of shows like Made in Chelsea and Towie. My sister was one of the Hannah Montana generation and has found role models in the likes of Amy Childs, and they don’t necessarily have a talent to showcase like Miley Cyrus does.
